Etsy Search Data 2026

We track public Etsy search results every day to power ListEZ. This is what 1,672,569 listing snapshots say about how Etsy search actually behaves, including two findings that contradict the standard advice.

The three findings

One: each word you add to a keyword phrase removes most of the competition. The median two-word phrase competes with 58,406 Etsy listings; a five-word phrase competes with 28.

Two: Etsy rank is far more stable than sellers think. Over a median 31 days, 21.0% of listings held the exact same position and the median move was 2 places. Only 6.1% moved ten or more.

Three: rewriting a title moves a listing about 49% more than leaving it alone, but barely changes the odds that it moves up (29.3% versus 27.6%). A rewrite is a bigger swing in both directions.

Sample: 1,672,569 snapshots of 914,804 distinct listings across 31,290 keywords, captured over 84 days (2026-05-27 to 2026-09-21). Aggregate figures only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words should an Etsy keyword phrase be?

Three to five. Across 32,186 scored keywords, the median two-word phrase competes with 58,406 listings, a three-word phrase with 9,539, and a five-word phrase with just 28. Mean competition falls from 89 to 34 out of 100 over the same span, so each word you add removes most of the field.

How much do Etsy search rankings move?

Less than sellers expect. Across 528,569 re-observations of the same listing and keyword a median 31 days apart, 21.0% held the exact same position and the median move was 2 places. Only 6.1% moved ten or more places. Day-to-day rank panic is mostly noise.

Does rewriting an Etsy title improve its ranking?

It moves it, which is not the same thing. Listings whose title changed moved 4.33 places on average against 2.9 for listings left alone, about 49% more movement, but only 29.3% improved versus 27.6% of unchanged listings. A rewrite is a bigger swing in both directions. This is observational: sellers tend to rewrite titles that are already struggling.

How often do Etsy sellers actually change their titles?

Almost never. Only 1.4% of re-observed listings had a different title between two sightings a median 31 days apart, 7,406 out of 528,569. Titles are the most edited-about and least edited part of an Etsy listing.

Where does this Etsy data come from?

ListEZ's own keyword and rank-tracking pipelines, which capture public Etsy search results daily. This report covers 1,672,569 listing snapshots across 914,804 distinct listings and 31,290 keywords, captured over 84 days between 2026-05-27 and 2026-09-21. Figures are aggregate only; no individual shop or seller is identifiable.

How many words should an Etsy keyword be?

We scored 32,186 keywords for competition and counted how many live Etsy listings compete for each. Grouped by word count, the fall-off is steeper than "target long-tail keywords" suggests.

Etsy keyword competition by phrase length, 32,186 keywords, as of 2026-09-21
Phrase length Keywords sampled Mean competition (0–100) Median competing listings
1 word 641 92 427,568
2 words 8,649 89 58,406
3 words 15,486 74 9,539
4 words 5,210 59 1,254
5 words 2,200 34 28

Read the last column as a survival curve. Going from two words to three removes 83.7% of the competing field. Three to four removes another 86.9%. Four to five removes 97.8%, leaving a median of 28 listings to beat.

The practical read: a single-word keyword is not a keyword, it is a category with 427,568 listings in it. Three to five words is where a listing can realistically rank, which is also why Etsy's own title guidance points at natural phrases rather than keyword lists. Our Etsy title character limit guide covers how to fit five or six of those phrases into one compliant title.

Phrases of six or more words are excluded: the sample holds only 16 of them, too few to report.

How much does Etsy search rank actually move?

Sellers check rank daily and read every wobble as an algorithm change. We compared 528,569 pairs of sightings of the same listing on the same keyword, a median 31 days apart.

Etsy rank movement between two sightings, 528,569 observations, median 31 days apart
MeasureValue
Held the exact same position21.0%
Median move2 places
Mean move2.9 places
Moved 5 or more places20.0%
Moved 10 or more places6.1%

A fifth of listings did not move at all over a month, and the typical listing moved 2 places. Large moves are rare: only 6.1% shifted ten or more positions. If your rank slid two or three places this week, that is the normal texture of Etsy search, not a penalty.

The corollary matters more. Because rank is sticky, a listing parked on page four is unlikely to drift onto page one on its own. Movement has to be caused.

What happens when a seller rewrites a title?

We can see when a listing's title changed between two sightings, because we store a hash of it. Only 1.4% of re-observed listings had a different title, 7,406 out of 528,569. Titles are the most discussed and least edited part of an Etsy listing.

Rank movement by whether the title changed, 528,569 observations
Measure Title changed Title unchanged
Observations 7,406 521,163
Mean movement 4.33 places 2.9 places
Share that improved 29.3% 27.6%

Changing a title produced about 49% more movement (4.33 places against 2.9), but the share that improved barely budged: 29.3% versus 27.6%. So a rewrite reliably shakes a listing loose. It does not reliably shake it upward.

We would rather publish that than the version that flatters the product. It is also the honest argument for doing rewrites properly instead of often: since a title edit is a real lever with a near-even chance of going either way, the content of the rewrite is what decides the outcome. Guessing at it twice a month is worse than getting it right once.

One caveat that matters. This is observational, not a controlled test. Title edits are not randomly assigned, and sellers tend to rewrite the listings that are already sliding, which drags the changed group's average down. Read it as "title edits move listings", not "title edits cause a 49% swing".
