Etsy Character Counter

Paste or type your title, tags and description. The counts update as you type, the preview shows where a phone cuts your title off, and nothing leaves your browser until you press "Check against the rules".

0 / 140 characters · 0 words

Etsy allows up to 140 characters. ListEZ aims for 100–130 characters and at most 15 words.

Both cards are set at the width of a search result and stop after two lines. Real cut-off points move with the device, the font size and the app version, so read this as a guide to what a shopper sees first, not a measurement.

0 / 13 tags

Etsy takes 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. A tag over the limit turns red.

Under 300 characters ListEZ calls a description short; from 800 it gets full marks for length.

How many characters can an Etsy title have?

An Etsy title can be up to 140 characters, and each listing gets 13 tags of up to 20 characters. Etsy's own advice is a clear title of under 15 words. We aim for 100–130 characters: enough to say what the item is, who it's for and what format it comes in, without the stuffing that reads as spam.

How the counter works

Everything above the button runs in your browser. Each time you type, the page counts characters: every letter, space, comma and symbol counts as one. Spaces at the very start and end are left out of the count. Words are the runs of text between spaces.

The title bar fills toward Etsy's 140-character limit and turns red past it, since Etsy will not save a longer title. The note under the bar tells you where you sit against our 100–130 range and Etsy's advice of under 15 words, so you can see at a glance whether you have room to add a phrase or need to cut one.

Tags work the way Etsy's tag box does: type them separated by commas and each one becomes a chip with its own count. Etsy takes at most 13 and no tag over 20 characters, so a chip past either limit turns red and the counter says how many tags you have used.

The description counter shows characters and words, and sets the opening 160 characters in a search-result layout under your title. That opening is what we treat as your listing's snippet in Google, so it should say plainly what the item is rather than open with a greeting or a shop policy.

The rule check is the one step that talks to our server. It sends your title and tags (never your description) and runs them through the ListEZ optimizer's own title and tag checks, keeping the ones that hold for any shop. (Inside ListEZ the optimizer adds checks that need to know what your shop sells.) You get each finding in plain words: a word used twice, a tag that repeats a whole phrase from the title, a tag over the limit, a seasonal tag outside the last 2 slots, a tag with an old year in it. It also marks the first 45 characters of your title in both previews, the part that has to say what the item is. We don't keep what you paste. Like any web request, the check can show up for a short while in our server's request log, so leave out anything private. The check is free, with a limit on how many you can run in an hour so the tool stays fast for everyone.

The rules behind the numbers

Some of these numbers are Etsy's and some are ours. It matters which is which, because a limit Etsy enforces stops you saving a listing, while our rules are advice built on what we see in search.

For the reasoning and worked examples, read our Etsy title guide and the Etsy tag strategy guide. For what title rewrites actually do to rank, see Etsy Search Data 2026.

When counting is not enough

A counter tells you a title fits. It cannot tell you whether the words are the ones buyers type. That takes search data: which phrases have demand, how many listings compete for them, and whether your own listings are already fighting each other for the same tag. The ListEZ keyword research tool answers those, and the Etsy title generator writes titles inside every rule on this page and publishes them to your shop once you approve them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many characters can an Etsy title be?

Up to 140 characters, which is Etsy's limit. Etsy also advises keeping a title under 15 words. ListEZ's own range is 100-130 characters: long enough to say what the item is and who it is for, short of the point where a title starts repeating itself.

How many tags can an Etsy listing have, and how long can they be?

13 tags, each up to 20 characters. Use every slot with a phrase a buyer would type, rather than a single word, and avoid tags that copy a whole phrase already in your title.

Does the counter count spaces and punctuation?

Yes. Every letter, space, comma and symbol is one character. Spaces at the very start and end are left out of the count.

How much of my title shows on a phone?

It depends on the device, the app and the font size, so the preview is an approximation: your title set at the width of a search result and cut after two lines. The safe habit is the one ListEZ follows: say what the item is in the first 45 characters.

Is my listing text stored?

No. The counts and previews run in your browser. The rule check sends only your title and tags and checks them. We don't keep them, though like any web request the check can show up for a short while in our server's request log. It needs no account.
