What are Etsy’s new AI rules?

On October 22, 2026, Etsy tightened its AI rules. AI-written patterns, recipes and other how-to guides are banned. Most listings need one unedited photo of the real item. AI artwork is still allowed if you made real creative choices and say AI was used. Bot-made listings and prompt bundles are banned.

Checked October 24, 2026. These rules are two days old. Etsy has not published a deadline or a grace period for existing listings, and some details are still unclear (listed near the end). The headline rules below are quoted from Etsy’s own announcement. The fine print (exceptions, enforcement, the full list of banned guides) comes from news coverage of the full Seller Handbook article, so read that too. Where we are giving our own reading, we say so. This is not legal advice.

What Etsy says in its own words

Etsy’s announcement to sellers states two beliefs: “AI should support your creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them,” and “Buyers should always be able to understand the role you play in every item you sell.” Then come the two rules:

Your listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. That photo can’t be edited or changed, and some exceptions may apply depending on what you sell. All photos must accurately represent what a buyer will receive.

We’re introducing new restrictions on AI-generated listings, including prohibiting bot-generated listings and AI-generated functional guides, such as patterns, recipes, and instructions.

The short version

Allowed Not allowed
AI artwork where you wrote the prompts, picked and refined the results, and told buyers AI was used Selling AI-made art as hand-drawn, hand-painted or “entirely my own”
Your own original pattern, with a real photo of the finished item AI-written knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery or quilting patterns
AI-edited extra photos that still show the item accurately AI used to hide damage or change what the item really looks like
A recipe or plan you wrote yourself AI-generated recipes, woodworking plans, build plans or instruction manuals
Print on demand with Etsy-authorized mockups of your original design Listings created in bulk by a bot with no person reviewing them
Digital downloads with a preview of the real file Selling AI prompt bundles on their own

Rule 1: AI can’t write the instructions

Etsy now bans AI-generated “functional guides.” That covers knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, recipes, woodworking and construction plans, and instruction manuals. If a buyer follows the steps, a person who actually made the thing needs to have written them.

Etsy’s reason is trust. Sellers complained that AI crochet patterns could not produce the item shown in the photos, and buyers were left with something they could not make.

Allowed: a crochet pattern you designed and tested, written up with help from a spell checker or a translation tool, with photos of your finished piece.

Not allowed: a pattern an AI wrote from a prompt, with an AI picture of what the finished item “should” look like.

Rule 2: One real, unedited photo

Most listings now need at least one photo of the actual item against a real background. Unedited means no cropping, resizing, straightening, lighting or exposure changes, and no swapped background.

Your other photos can use AI editing, as long as the result still shows the real item. Etsy’s test applies to every photo, not just the first: all photos must accurately represent what the buyer will receive. Brightening a dark photo is fine. Removing a scratch is not.

Some listings follow different rules:

  • Patterns, recipes and seeds: show a real finished result made or grown with your product.
  • Print on demand: if a production partner prints your original design, authorized stock mockups are fine.
  • Digital downloads: include a preview or excerpt of what the buyer gets. For wall art, our reading is the actual file, not only a room scene.
  • Downloads with nothing to look at, such as audio: representative images are fine, even AI-made, if they don’t mislead.
  • Made-to-order items: show real examples of your earlier work.

Room-scene mockups sit in the “other photos” group. Our reading is that they are fine as extra images when they show your real art at a believable size and scale. Keep a clear, accurate preview of the file itself in the set, and see our guide to mockups for digital downloads.

Rule 3: AI art is allowed, with disclosure

Etsy still allows AI-generated art and digital art when you play a clear part in making it and are open about the process. Think of a fantasy scene you prompted and refined, or a pet portrait personalized from a customer’s photo.

Disclosure is required when AI is used to create the product itself. Etsy’s Creativity Standards, as seller guides quote them, ask you to say so in the listing description, so that is the safest place. Etsy has not published exact wording. Keep it plain. For example:

This artwork was created with AI image tools, then selected, edited and finished by me.

That sentence is our example, not Etsy’s text. Telling buyers when AI helped edit your photos is described as good practice, not a requirement.

Allowed: AI artwork that you directed and finished, with the disclosure in the description and a preview of the file in the photos.

Not allowed: the same artwork described as “hand-painted,” or a listing where the only evidence of human involvement is pressing a button.

Rule 4: No bot listings, no prompt bundles

Etsy bans listings created by bots, meaning mass automated creation of products or listings with no person making creative choices and checking the result. Selling AI prompt bundles as a standalone product has been banned since 2024 and is still banned.

Using software to help you work is not the problem. Handing the whole job to a script that publishes whatever it generates is.

Examples at a glance

Allowed

  • A set of landscape prints you prompted, curated and upscaled, disclosed in the description, with a preview of the file and room mockups as extra images.
  • A T-shirt with your original design printed by a partner, shown with an authorized mockup.
  • A knitting pattern you wrote, with a photo of a sweater you knitted from it.
  • A planner PDF with real preview pages.
  • A product photo where AI adjusted the lighting on photo number three.
  • AI help with the words in your title, tags and description (see the note below).

Not allowed

  • An AI-written sewing pattern with an AI render as the only picture.
  • A cookbook of AI-generated recipes.
  • A listing for “500 Midjourney prompts.”
  • A script that publishes 200 listings overnight with nobody reading them.
  • A vintage item photographed, then edited so a chip in the glaze disappears.
  • AI art labeled “original hand-painted illustration.”

A note on listing text. None of the coverage we found says anything about AI-written titles, tags or descriptions. The rules are about the item itself and the images. If Etsy says more, we will update this post.

What Etsy says will happen

  • Listings that break the rules can be removed. Repeated or serious violations can lead to action on the whole shop.
  • Buyers who open a case over an item that is materially different from its listing may be owed a refund.
  • Etsy is adding guidance when you add listing photos, and shows a notice at upload when it detects AI-generated images. Coverage says it plans to extend that to existing listings.
  • Etsy says it is investing in tools to find misleading images and fraudulent listings, and will explore more ways to give buyers context about AI use.
  • A new option lets people report misleading AI imagery. Etsy says early reports gather information and don’t trigger action by themselves.
  • Appeals go through the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager.
  • Etsy says it will expand listing removals over the coming months and is building tools for sellers to show authorship.

What is still unclear

  • Whether a “Your Design Here” mockup can still be a primary photo for personalized items. Etsy removed an older ban on blank mockups, then said nothing more.
  • Whether the new limits apply to listings made through third-party tools that use Etsy’s official API.
  • How Etsy will tell prohibited AI content from permitted AI use.
  • What evidence the upcoming authorship tools will ask for.
  • The exact disclosure wording.

A 10-minute shop check

  1. Sort your listings by type: art, patterns or recipes, physical items, other.
  2. Any pattern, recipe or plan written by AI: take the listing down or rewrite it yourself.
  3. Open each listing and check that the first photo is a real, unedited photo, or a file preview for a digital download.
  4. Add a plain AI disclosure to every AI-assisted artwork description.
  5. Remove words like “hand-drawn” or “hand-painted” from anything AI helped make.
  6. Delete any listing you can’t explain choosing, drafting or checking yourself.
  7. Look at your Policy Violations page in Shop Manager once a week while the new rules settle in.

FAQ

Can I still sell AI art on Etsy?

Yes. You need to play a clear creative role, say AI was used, and not present the work as handmade or entirely your own.

Do digital downloads need a real photo?

Not an unedited photo of the item. Etsy asks for a preview or excerpt of what the buyer will receive. Patterns and recipes are different: they need a real finished result.

Can I use AI to improve my product photos?

On extra photos, yes, if the edit keeps the item accurate. Your main unedited photo can’t be edited that way.

Can AI help me write my listing title, tags or description?

The announcements we found don’t restrict it. They are about the item and its images. Your title still has to describe what you actually sell.

Is there a deadline to fix my old listings?

Etsy has not announced one. Treat the new rules as already in force and update older listings now.

One disclosure: ListEZ builds tools that use AI for listing text and for the artwork workflow, so we have an interest in how these rules are read. We tried to report what Etsy and the coverage say, and to mark where we are giving our own reading. To review a whole shop against rules like these, the Etsy listing optimizer audits every listing’s title, tags and description in one pass.
